The Short Walk to Rideau Hall

I’m looking out the window of my office trying to see if Stephen Harper is making his way to Rideau Hall. I am surprised he has not gone yet. With this week’s stunning change in the Quebec electoral landscape, every journalist and politico in town is predicting an early election. Keep your calendars open on May 28 or June 25th. Even though the Prime Minister’s budget did not buy Premier Charest much support, it looks like the political ground has shifted dramatically in Quebec. So, what’s stopping him? Almost nothing. The BQ is in disarray, the NDP keep talking about bank machines, the Liberals have fallen and the Conservatives are at 40% in the polls and now have a fighting chance of really winning some seats in Quebec. That’s enough for a majority. Sure, it may be difficult to call an election right now, but the Prime Minister is bold, he won’t need an environmental excuse or some phony crime bill to do it. He’ll just do it. He’ll walk to Rideau Hall and convince the GG we need an election and watch out.

I just don't see Harper rushing into an election hastily. For him, there is no point in going to the polls unless he can get a majority, and the polls right now are too close to call if that will happen.
With the opposition all in shambles and not wanting an election, I think we'll see a more ambitious agenda (daring the opposition to bring him down).

Harper is in too deep, he will only call an election if he can gain a significant amount of power. I don't think that he can do that right now and I am glad. The C's favour increasing is only circumstantial. anything could tip the scale and he knows it. All that needs to happen is for a crazy rednecked Albertan to say something dumb about being conservative and hating gays or any social or international isse that is controversial and down goes their favourability. I am sure that his tenticals are reaching out and tightly covering their mouths as we speak....but slowly..................................

The environment seems favourable for sure but what is he going to do about that fixed election bill? Is he not committed to calling an election in 2009? With the opposition in the duldrums, they won't force him into anything so we may have to wait.
