FART Tax

A little humour combined with fact comes together in this tale.  First, the facts: methane gas emissions from livestock make up half New Zealand's CO2 emissions. Second, the humour:  New Zealand farmers have launched their FART campaign.

Working to come up with innovative solutions for reducing emissions, the
FART campaign hopes to find a vaccine to stop sheep (and cows) from passing wind.  Whatever ... this story simply reinforces what we all know.  No single solution holds the answer to climate change.  Creative thinking is needed now more than ever, which is exactly what these farmers are doing - working together to come up with new responses.

Pretty easy fix - just add vegetable enzymes to their feed. Works like a damn for me!

Ha ha!  So presumably these were "natural" emissions in times gone by.  But because we've gone into 'intenstive' livestock production, they now need restraining.  I don't like the idea of vaccines.  What will that do to the meat and milk that we eat?  Keep thinking, guys, there's sure to be another way.

What a gas!

Really, how far will humans go to deny their own culpability in raising CO2 emissions by blaming the poor animals!

Even if, statistically speaking, this is true, I think having humans be more energy efficient is a much saner solution than tampering with mother nature -- yet again!

Will we never learn??

Ohh my goodness!  I cannot imagine what would happen to the poor little sheep that are taking a vaccine to prevent them from passing wind!  Poor bloated little guys!  Sounds a little nasty!
