Colleen McCrory will be sorely missed. My husband, Miles, and I have known her for years. To give you a flavour of Colleen’s nature, Miles first met her some 40 years ago in New Denver, BC where he was running a silver mine. She was about sixteen and working as a waitress at the local hotel . It didn’t take them long to get into friendly conversation, and before he knew it, he was invited home to meet the whole family … mother, Mabel, and all 8 siblings. That’s just how Colleen was. Mind you, she came by her feisty, friendly attitude honestly. When Mabel was mayor, she got so tired of people asking where New Denver is that she had T-shirts made up emblazoned with the slogan “Where the H*** is New Denver?”

Colleen’s feistiness stood her in good stead all her life. She led countless campaigns to save the wilderness and was internationally renowned for her efforts. The Valhalla Wilderness Society, one of her many legacies to us all, is accepting donations in her memory.

I also knew Collen and think of her as a remarkableand very humble person.  She had an amazing ability to be calm, focussed, welcoming and had tremendous passion for the envronment and her community.

What a lovely, and obviously, humble woman. I had not heard of her before, but feel that I should have. Why do we not celebrate those who dedicate their lives to the common good? Instead we celebrate "celebrity" - Paris Hilton, David Beckham, Stephen Harper - er, nix that last one ....

I am sure that history will remember her quite favourably.

How lovely for you and Miles to have known such a lovely woman.

Big shoes to fill indeed in the environmental community.

Granola mom wanting to make the world a better place for her children.
